Curriculum 

Seashore Learning Center, in partnership with parents, shares the responsibility to promote excellence in education.

We provide opportunities for the students to:

• Acquire skills necessary to become successful adults

• Develop the ability to think logically, creatively and independently

• Develop a positive attitude toward learning

• Develop a positive self-concept

• Be an active and accountable participant in the learning process

Seashore Learning Center provides a child-centered and developmentally appropriate curriculum.  The curriculum focuses on:

• Principles and stages of child development

• Interdisciplinary thematic study units

• Discovery/hands-on science and social studies activities

• Ecological studies emphasizing Padre Island's ecosystems 

• Balanced, whole language and phonics reading instruction

• The use of computers within the curriculum

• Fosters individual interest and understanding

• Values cultural and linguistic diversity

• Recognizes the social nature of learning

SLC believes in active student learning.  A variety of instructional strategies are used, such as:

• Parent/Teacher/Student conferencing

• Demonstrations

• Learning Logs

• Problem Solving

• Response Groups

Cooperative Learning is used to promote academic as well as social success.  Thematic units integrate Core Knowledge and are based on the skills that encompass the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for the various modules.  Core Knowledge and skills are taught through multi-age instruction allowing students a larger window for learning than a traditional grade restricted environment.  Students are exposed to developmentally appropriate materials with any deficiency being addressed with remediation.

Assessment

Student achievement is reported with the use of portfolios and skills checklists presented in student-led parent conferences.  Grades three and four take the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test in the Spring and grade two will take the ITBS.

Students will be assessed in the areas of reading and math at the beginning and end of every school year.  All pre-assessment should be completed by the end of September.  Pre- and post-assessments are to be shared with parents at the last portfolio conference of the year.  

Portfolios should include 1-2 items the teacher and student select per subject to reflect student growth and accomplishments. In addition to work samples, some class projects and student demonstation of activities may be included. Parents are required to attend all student-led conferences.
